In the Pages of History

In the creative writing class this week, we were telling the kids to find inspiration from images. They were asked to bring in an image from home and use it as a jumping point to write something. To bring them outside of the box of what they know, I found the following pictures in a link by Luxe Modo which was going around on Facebook. Showing them these historical pictures brought on discussions of an array of issues and how the pictures can be used out of context to what is being directly portrayed (please note I refrained from showing them the suicide one toward the bottom!).
When you strip away the historical ramifications, they really could be used in any story – especially the war images. In my head they bubble up stories of post-apocalyptic, intergalactic or futuristic war.
Other images conjure exciting ideas for character and costume; there is so much steampunk emanating from these photos! Plus I can’t ignore how some of the men could literally be a modern hipster leaving a speakeasy in the city on an average Thursday night – check out the Charlie Chaplin one.
Disaster, poverty, oppression – there’s so much you can take from these simple pictures; they really are incredible and pen-flickingly inspirational.
